New this year – TWO Sunday Conference Workshops to help you maximize on your time in Whistler!

Sunday, September 18th, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Workshop A – Power of Orientations, presented by Lawrence Smith, Cameco Corporation

Description: Much like families, successful companies rely on the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and values that their employees hold in order to function effectively on many levels.   Many of these attributes are derived through
the orientation process.  Orientations are where you can make it or lose it. This is your one greatest opportunity where you put forth your objectives in such a way that your new employees will accept and respect them.  It is the right time
to send a strong message that sets the standards you expect your employees to
abide by.

This interactive workshop will address what constitutes a good orientation and how a poorly delivered orientation can erode the safety goals and objectives of a company, resulting in poor performance.  Orientations are often
underestimated by senior management and thus the company misses out on setting the proper stage for safety goals and objectives.  During this workshop, we will discuss what happens to non-orientated or disoriented employees.

Participants will experience interactive, participatory learning through group-based discussion, question and answer period, visual aids, and thought provoking activities.  Participants will also have the opportunity
to develop an Orientation Checklist and will learn tools and techniques to create
a learning environment through this energetic presentation, combined with a
professional hand-out package.

Workshop B – Investigating a Railway Crossing Accident, presented by Ron Clerk, Senior Investigator/Analyst, Transportation Safety Board of Canada

Description: This is an intermediate workshop geared to mid level subject matter, geared to expereinced OHSE practitioners.

Working through an investigation with transportation Safety Board investigators, this interactive workshop uncovers the safety deficiencies of a railway crossing accident where a company driver was killed. Participants will earn a Certificate of Participation from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

Highlights of this year’s keynote speakers include: Corrie Pitzer, a specialist in behavioural safety and strategic safety management; Ian Percy, named one of the top 21 speakers for the 21st century by“Successful Meetings” magazine, and Jeff MacInnis, set to inspire with his examples of excellence.

Sunday, September 18th
Corrie  Pitzer – SAFEmap International
The Emperor Has No Clothes On …
The Seven Deadly Myths of Safety

The management of safety has undergone a number of radical changes in the past 100 years. The most important paradigm shift occurred in the work of Heinrich, then in the advent of the safety systems era and, of late, the behavioural safety approaches that became popular around the world. Each of these ‘approaches’ to safety left an indelible mark on the way we target safety improvements, what interventions are deployed and how those interventions are measured. It also resulted in a number of strongly held “myths” of safety management. Each of these will be discussed, analysed and challenged in this presentation.

Corrie Pitzer is the founder and CEO of SAFEmap International and is one of the leading consultants in Australia.  He is currently based in Canada, consulting to mining companies in North America, Asia, Russia and South America.

Monday, September 19th
Ian Percy – The Ian Percy Corporation

The Wisdom of Collaboration:  Possibility or Pipe Dream?

Ian takes proven principles from the world of quantum physics and energetics and shows how to use them to significantly advance the cause of your safety, health and environmental goals – to say nothing of increasing passion, performance and profitability!  His impact has been felt by organizations around the world. Ian is the author of seven books including the breakthrough book on
leadership titled Going Deep, and The Profitable Power of Purpose,
a powerful book on corporate vision. Successful Meetings magazine declared
Ian “One of the top 21 speakers for the 21st century” and he has the rare honour
of being inducted into both the Canadian and US Speaker Halls of Fame.

Wednesday, September 21st
Jeff MacInnis
Explorer, Award Winning Author, Skier, and Entrepreneur

Jeff MacInnis achieved a four-hundred-year-old impossible challenge when he led the first team to sail the Northwest Passage. This epic journey covered 4,000 kilometres over 100 days in an 18-foot boat–using only the wind and a dream as the sources of power. The expedition survived one of the harshest environments on the face of this planet, through an ice-choked passage that has claimed more lives than Mount Everest.

Jeff has been involved in numerous gruelling challenges including the Eco-Challenge, the World Championships of Expedition Racing, watched by over a billion people. He led his team through 500 km over nine days through dense rainforest, ancient caves and some of the most beautiful coral reefs on the planet.

Using extraordinary footage, Jeff illustrates what it takes to go to the extreme and succeed. As a world-class speaker on teamwork, leadership and excellence, he has inspired, coached and motivated over 500 audiences in nine countries.

The Importance of Professional Development: CSSE Professional Development Conference

Article By: Yvonne Thompson, CHSC, CHRP, MA (Leadership), Chairperson, CSSE PDC

Once a year I have the privilege of connecting with Safety Professionals from across the country and around the world. This opportunity arises with the CSSE’s Annual Professional Development Conference held each fall.  Beautiful Whistler, B.C. plays host to the CSSE Professional Development Conference in September 2011 .   Once again, I will connect with old and new friends within the Safety Profession.

This  year will mark the 9th consecutive  CSSE conference I  have attended, and I  am confident this year will be as beneficial as each one before. The main difference this year is that I have had the privilege of Chairing the Professional Development Conference Committee.  This committed group of Safety Professionals, from across the country, has done a wonderful job creating a fabulous and dynamic program that is sure to stretch your thinking and challenge your safety leadership.

CSSE’s  Professional Development Conference  is the highlight of my year; as it provides an exceptional learning opportunity through keynotes and concurrent sessions. But there is also a sincere willingness of delegates to share their expertise and experiences, which makes this event my favorite. I have to admit that although I benefit immensely from the learning opportunities,  I love the  range of  networking  and professional development possibilities.

Every year I have the pleasure of networking with some of the most dynamic safety professionals in the country, many of which have become friends and colleagues.   The conference would not be the same without the opportunity to see the sights and enjoy the company of others in an informal social setting. Whistler, B.C. is sure to have everything you want from a tourist location; great countryside, fabulous food and a venue that has it all.

Don’t miss the opportunity to learn, rejuvenate, energize, and connect with peers, friends, and professional associates.

See you in Whistler, B.C in September 2011

CSSE 2010! My First Time at the CSSE Annual Conference: An Event Worth Attending. An Article by Phil Lucas ME

An Article by Phil Lucas ME

You do not have to be a safety professional to attend this great annual CSSE conference. I am a non-safety professional that has spent many years in the operations section in the electrical utility sector and was fortunate to be able to attend the 2010 conference in Halifax. As this was my first CSSE conference, I found all the sessions that I attended were diverse in topics and were presented by highly qualified speakers.

I viewed state of the art products in the exhibition area and found that the exhibitors were very knowledgeable and helpful. You do not just come away from this conference with a rejuvenated approach for safety; you come away with an abundance of best practices to bring back to your organization.

Many employers believe that health and safety efforts must be “balanced” with productivity and financial concerns to ensure that the company stays in business. Their idea is that money spent on health and safety is money taken away from profit. Not so. The same management practices that lead to healthy and safe employees also lead to a healthy bottom line. So by sending employees to the annual CSSE conference, whether they are safety professionals or non-safety professionals, it should lead to safer employees and a better bottom line.

Oh, did I forget to mention how great the lobster was!

Meet CSSE 2010 PDC Speaker Rocco Meraglia

Earlier this summer, we connected with CSSE 2010 PDC speaker Rocco Meraglia. See what he had to say below.

CSSE: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to work in the field of occupational health and safety?

RM: Sure, I started out after University working for the fire department. In my hometown I started working on my rotation off at a local Gold Mine as a First Aid Attendant, worked my way on to the mine rescue team, and eventually into a position as a Safety Coordinator. I eventually got a call to take a firefighting position in a larger city and during my time off I again started to provide medic and safety services for the local booming condo construction that was occurring at the time. My first major HSE position was during the construction phase at the Ekati Diamond and Diavik Diamond Mine Projects in the Northwest Territories.

CSSE: Every year, CSSE hosts hundreds of occupational health and safety practitioners for four days of professional development opportunities, which include special workshop sessions like the one you’ll be presenting. Can you tell us about what you’ll be presenting and what you hope to achieve through the session?

RM: I am a huge fan of the CSSE and as a long-standing member I feel that it is a privilege to be able to present in Halifax for the PDC 2010. These conferences provide the opportunity to meet your peers, discuss opportunities and common issues. This year I will be presenting a session on the Implementation and Strategically Communicating Wellness Programs. What I hope to achieve is to make people aware of the association of workplace and worker longevity through workplace wellness programs. Ultimately I want to provide a how to guide for all levels to enrich an existing program or to facilitate a program start up.

CSSE 2010 PDC: Why This Program is Important to Me

I have been attending CSSE Professional Development Conferences since the mid-90s. Over the years, this Conference has become the one I most look forward to attending each year.

Why?

Because the CSSE PDC isn’t just another “safety conference.” It’s a Professional Development Conference. As an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner, I already have technical knowledge, but that knowledge is only as good as my ability to communicate it to the people who rely on me to provide them with current and accurate information. In addition to being a valuable forum for sharing the newest innovations in health and safety, the CSSE PDC provides Health and Safety Practitioners with the skills and knowledge needed to be a strategic player in today’s workforce.

We’ve all heard the phrase “more than the sum of its parts.” That certainly describes the CSSE PDC. With concurrent sessions, interactive workshops, networking opportunities, and social events, the Conference is an experience that engages participants in many ways. The sessions and workshops are carefully balanced to provide learning opportunities for Health and Safety Practitioners across multiple industries and at various levels of expertise. There is something for everyone, regardless of whether you are new to the profession or have 30 years of experience.

Equally as important as enhancing my skills and knowledge is the opportunity to interact with colleagues from across the country and around the world and to share knowledge and experiences, both formally and informally. I look forward each year to seeing familiar faces and to meeting new friends and colleagues.

I look forward to meeting you this year!
