CSSE 2011 Conference Highlight – Relationships Amongst

Regulators and Employers – a Panel Presentation
Tuesday, September 20th
8:30 am – 10:00 am

Featuring
Moderator:         Jim Hopkins, CHSC, CRSP
Regulators:        Al Johnson, WorkSafeBC & Tom Abercrombie, CSSE Ottawa Chapter Chair
Non-regulators: Shawn Henn, Trotter and Morton & Sam Chauhan, City of Surrey

Almost all safety professionals fill a role – likely either as a regulator or as part of an employer’s safety team.  Regardless of what your particular role is, most of us would agree that we all have the same goal:  the elimination of workplace accidents!

So why is it that we sometimes seem to struggle to get along?  Linking directly with the theme of this year’s conference, “Collaboration, Collective Wisdom”, this session will examine the relationship between these groups by hearing from a panel of very experienced individuals representing each of the two groups.  Presenters will give examples of how “relationships” can positively and/or negatively affect you and your organization.

The CSSE Professional Development Conference is the must-attend event of the year! To register click here or visit http://www.csse.org/. and click on the conference banner for more information.

New this year – TWO Sunday Conference Workshops to help you maximize on your time in Whistler!

Sunday, September 18th, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Workshop A – Power of Orientations, presented by Lawrence Smith, Cameco Corporation

Description: Much like families, successful companies rely on the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and values that their employees hold in order to function effectively on many levels.   Many of these attributes are derived through
the orientation process.  Orientations are where you can make it or lose it. This is your one greatest opportunity where you put forth your objectives in such a way that your new employees will accept and respect them.  It is the right time
to send a strong message that sets the standards you expect your employees to
abide by.

This interactive workshop will address what constitutes a good orientation and how a poorly delivered orientation can erode the safety goals and objectives of a company, resulting in poor performance.  Orientations are often
underestimated by senior management and thus the company misses out on setting the proper stage for safety goals and objectives.  During this workshop, we will discuss what happens to non-orientated or disoriented employees.

Participants will experience interactive, participatory learning through group-based discussion, question and answer period, visual aids, and thought provoking activities.  Participants will also have the opportunity
to develop an Orientation Checklist and will learn tools and techniques to create
a learning environment through this energetic presentation, combined with a
professional hand-out package.

Workshop B – Investigating a Railway Crossing Accident, presented by Ron Clerk, Senior Investigator/Analyst, Transportation Safety Board of Canada

Description: This is an intermediate workshop geared to mid level subject matter, geared to expereinced OHSE practitioners.

Working through an investigation with transportation Safety Board investigators, this interactive workshop uncovers the safety deficiencies of a railway crossing accident where a company driver was killed. Participants will earn a Certificate of Participation from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

CSSE 2010! My First Time at the CSSE Annual Conference: An Event Worth Attending. An Article by Phil Lucas ME

An Article by Phil Lucas ME

You do not have to be a safety professional to attend this great annual CSSE conference. I am a non-safety professional that has spent many years in the operations section in the electrical utility sector and was fortunate to be able to attend the 2010 conference in Halifax. As this was my first CSSE conference, I found all the sessions that I attended were diverse in topics and were presented by highly qualified speakers.

I viewed state of the art products in the exhibition area and found that the exhibitors were very knowledgeable and helpful. You do not just come away from this conference with a rejuvenated approach for safety; you come away with an abundance of best practices to bring back to your organization.

Many employers believe that health and safety efforts must be “balanced” with productivity and financial concerns to ensure that the company stays in business. Their idea is that money spent on health and safety is money taken away from profit. Not so. The same management practices that lead to healthy and safe employees also lead to a healthy bottom line. So by sending employees to the annual CSSE conference, whether they are safety professionals or non-safety professionals, it should lead to safer employees and a better bottom line.

Oh, did I forget to mention how great the lobster was!

Back By Popular Demand: Executive Coaching & Résumé Critiquing

Last year, CSSE introduced executive coaching and résumé critiquing sessions to the conference program. The reaction was immediate and sessions filled up quickly. The feedback from participants, even months later, has been inspiring.

“My values are changing daily, and I am becoming a more compassionate individual who is finding purpose and joy in assisting others in reaching their goals and accomplishments. I have adopted the slogan of Daisaku Ikeda ‘Your Victory is My Victory’! …Thank you so very much for our session at the conference…”

This year, Deborah Colman and a selection of well-trained and qualified coaches are returning to the CSSE PDC to help you:

*Strategize the next phase of your career
*Define goals for your future
*Explore your leadership strengths to increase effectiveness
*Problem solve an issue in your current job situation

Deborah Colman is a Leader’s Coach who is committed to humanizing relationships at work by forming strategic partnerships with both individuals and teams.

A résumé expert will also be on hand to offer ideas and advice on how to showcase your background and experience to its utmost advantage. All sessions will be held in a discrete space, ensuring your privacy.

Once again, we’ve negotiated special rates for participants of the CSSE PDC. A 45-minute coaching session is just $74.99; a 30-minute résumé critique is only $49.

Openings for coaching and résumé critiques are available throughout the CSSE 2010 PDC. To book your appointment, please send an email to conference@csse.org.

All bookings will be made on a first-come-first-served basis so don’t delay.

See you in Halifax,
