The Seven Deadly Myths of Safety

The management of safety has undergone a number of radical changes in the past 100 years. The most important paradigm shift occurred in the work of Heinrich, then in the advent of the safety systems era and, of late, the behavioural safety approaches that became popular around the world. Each of these ‘approaches’ to safety left an indelible mark on the way we target safety improvements, what interventions are deployed and how those interventions are measured. It also resulted in a number of strongly held “myths” of safety management. Each of these will be discussed, analysed and challenged in this presentation.

Corrie Pitzer is the founder and CEO of SAFEmap International and is one of the leading consultants in Australia.  He is currently based in Canada, consulting to mining companies in North America, Asia, Russia and South America.

Jeff MacInnis
Explorer, Award Winning Author, Skier, and Entrepreneur

Jeff MacInnis achieved a four-hundred-year-old impossible challenge when he led the first team to sail the Northwest Passage. This epic journey covered 4,000 kilometres over 100 days in an 18-foot boat–using only the wind and a dream as the sources of power. The expedition survived one of the harshest environments on the face of this planet, through an ice-choked passage that has claimed more lives than Mount Everest.

Jeff has been involved in numerous gruelling challenges including the Eco-Challenge, the World Championships of Expedition Racing, watched by over a billion people. He led his team through 500 km over nine days through dense rainforest, ancient caves and some of the most beautiful coral reefs on the planet.

Using extraordinary footage, Jeff illustrates what it takes to go to the extreme and succeed. As a world-class speaker on teamwork, leadership and excellence, he has inspired, coached and motivated over 500 audiences in nine countries.

This year’s conference offers 33 sessions – including 6 half-day workshops presented by OHSE experts over the course of four days.  The specialized half-day workshops bring an in-depth look to the subject matter and are very hands-on.

Once a year I have the privilege of connecting with Safety Professionals from across the country and around the world. This opportunity arises with the CSSE’s Annual Professional Development Conference held each fall.  Beautiful Whistler, B.C. plays host to the CSSE Professional Development Conference in September 2011 .   Once again, I will connect with old and new friends within the Safety Profession.

This  year will mark the 9th consecutive  CSSE conference I  have attended, and I  am confident this year will be as beneficial as each one before. The main difference this year is that I have had the privilege of Chairing the Professional Development Conference Committee.  This committed group of Safety Professionals, from across the country, has done a wonderful job creating a fabulous and dynamic program that is sure to stretch your thinking and challenge your safety leadership.

 CSSE’s  Professional Development Conference  is the highlight of my year; as it provides an exceptional learning opportunity through keynotes and concurrent sessions. But there is also a sincere willingness of delegates to share their expertise and experiences, which makes this event my favorite. I have to admit that although I benefit immensely from the learning opportunities,  I love the  range of  networking  and professional development possibilities.  

Every year I have the pleasure of networking with some of the most dynamic safety professionals in the country, many of which have become friends and colleagues.   The conference would not be the same without the opportunity to see the sights and enjoy the company of others in an informal social setting. Whistler, B.C. is sure to have everything you want from a tourist location; great countryside, fabulous food and a venue that has it all. 

 Don’t miss the opportunity to learn, rejuvenate, energize, and connect with peers, friends, and professional associates.
